The free choice writing program will continue this week, with three lessons focused on your choice, and one session on poetry writing. Modelled teacher writing will be directed by Miss M, who will continue her narrative.
Maths... This week will be the final week of maths groups focused on 'Fractions, decimals and percentages'. Learning will be targeted at your needs; on Wednesday you will complete a pre-test for the next concept (Statistics and Probability), and on Friday you will complete the Fractions, decimals and percentages post-test. The two in-class maths lessons will be based around 'Number' development, with tasks based around extending your knowledge in a range of areas.
Inquiry Learning... This week you will work in groups to investigate what a new colony/settlement would need to be successful. You will research two real colonies that were set up in Australia, and then apply that knowledge to build your own 'colony'. You will need to think about the absolute necessities and requirements you would need for a colony to thrive. This is a speaking and listening assessment task, therefore you will be required to make a video with your group reporting on what you found out, with all group members equally sharing the speaking time. Your group will need to 'act out' the development of your colony.
On Friday, groups will present their video to the class.

This week we will focus on further developing your basic maths skills, particularly speed of automatic recall of times tables and number facts. While we know that some of you will ALREADY know some of these, everyone has room for improvement in this area. It is extremely important to develop these skills to a high level to assist with more complex maths work down the track. We will also look at problem solving and thinking skills.
Areas of focus will include: Times tables, basic addition and subtraction, inverse operation and fact families, skip counting and number patterns, developing mental strategies and problem solving skills for more complex problems.
Inquiry Learning
Antarctica - We will continue investigating Antarctica! We will discuss prior knowledge and understanding, making comparisons with other continents, and learning about the environment. This week we will also find out about famous explorers and what they went through to find out about Antarctica.
We’ll wrap up our look at climate change and global warming today - you need to do a bit of investigatory work to answer some key focus questions!
Climate
Your task today is to research the greenhouse effect and climate change.
Climate & Nature
- What are the unique characteristics of the climate and geography in Antarctica?
-What are the consequences of the increased accumulation of greenhouse gases?
-How does human activity add to the greenhouse effect?
-What is being done to reduce the greenhouse effect?
-What do you think should be done?
-What can you do?

Writing:

Week 5:
Inquiry LearningYour task is to investigate the effects of mining on the surrounding environment. Read through the information in the following two articles/websites, and compare and contrast the information. These articles show the two different perspectives of mining. You need to create a VENN Diagram on your iPads using Doodle Buddy or Pages, and list the similarities and differences shown in the two articles/websites.
Following this task, you will then get a chance to do some mining yourself! You will each get some choc chip cookies, and your job is to mine out the 'coal' (choc chips) using only 'tools' (toothpicks). You need to be very careful to cause as little damage as possible to the surrounding environment (the cookie).
